Are you spending time in New Orleans with your family and looking for fun activities to try out? With so much to do in the Big Easy, it might be difficult to find the perfect spots to visit. Luckily, we have you covered. Here are just some of our favorite places you should visit with the family to create memories for a lifetime.
Audubon Aquarium of the Americas
Adjacent to the historical French Quarter, the Audubon Aquarium lets you meet animals such as penguins, southern sea otters, stingrays, sand tiger sharks, and much more. There are plenty of exhibits for you and your family to enjoy that explore some of the deepest parts of the ocean. Some of the exhibits include a great Mayan reef from their sunken city, virtual reality exhibits, a giant screen theater, and even a penguin play zone! The entire family will have a great time learning about what goes on in the underwater world. If you can a weekend visit, you can even take the experience a step further by plunging into the waters to see the great Mayan reef up close and personal or go behind the scenes to pet the penguins. It will make for an outing you won’t forget!
After visiting the Audubon Aquarium, your fun with the wild doesn’t have to stop. Head over to the Audubon Zoo where you will find fun attractions such as the Elephant Pavilion and Pelican’s Nest. As you stroll around, you will find wild animals including giraffes, leopards, gorillas, and the rare white alligator. In just this small part of New Orleans you can travel from Asia to Africa, and all throughout the jungle without having to have a passport or pay traveling fees. Come enjoy and explore all the animals, and even learn some history about the place itself. You will be glad you did!
Blaine Kern’s Mardi Gras World
One of our favorite family fun activities to try in New Orleans is a trip to Blaine Kern’s Mardi Gras World. The Big Easy is known for a lot of things, but when it boils down to it, hosting Mardi Gras will always be NOLA’s signature event. The two-week celebration began in New Orleans around the 1600s, although it was nowhere near as flashy as it is today. Since then, Mardi Gras has grown significantly with the city, practically shutting down to allow hundreds upon hundreds of massive floats to stroll through the streets. One man who knows all about Mardi Gras floats is Blaine Kern, who was once the parade’s leading float designer and builder. During his apprenticeship he traveled to places such as Italy, France, and Spain, taking inspiration from all the different countries and applying it to his work. That work is now displayed for people to tour in his Mardi Gras World exhibit. Your family can take a tour through Kern’s massive studio that promises to unmask the greatest show on earth by letting you see what it takes to bring the festival to life every year.
You can’t visit New Orleans with the family and not go to Rock’n Bowl. They have created a fun environment with loads of family-friendly activities. Enjoy live music while you and your family bowl. Rock’n Bowl serves tasty food that even the pickiest eaters will enjoy. Many recommend going at night where the party really comes to life. It would make for an awesome way to end a day filled with family activities.
